Chapter Twelve

M ason wasn’t sure if Kai meant that literally or metaphorically. He hadn’t talked to his dad about his recent experience with Benjamin, even though he was on the phone every day with him. Mac knew that he was chatting regularly with Benjamin, but never asked anything about him. Now he had practically forced him out of the house with Kai.

What’s he up to, anyway?

“Did you mean that literally or metaphorically?” Mason decided to get that question out into the open as Kai was opening the passenger side of his pickup.

“Yes,” Kai taunted, with a shit-eating grin on his face.

They drove for a couple of blocks without speaking a word. It seemed odd to be in Kai’s truck and going to his house. Kai casually reached out, putting his hand lightly on Mason’s left thigh. He jumped slightly but didn’t push Kai away.

“You okay? You understand I was just kidding about taking you home, right?” Kai inquired.

“I’m fine, no worries,” Mason confirmed. “I’m trying to figure out what Dad’s up to. I mean he can’t know about this?”

Mason now found his left hand had moved over to Kai’s right leg—his chiseled, muscled, straining-against-the-fabric-on-his-jeans leg.

“We’ve been friendly with each other, so maybe he thinks…” Kai suggested.

“He hasn’t any reason to think I’m not straight—at least I don’t think he does. And then there’s you and your undefined sexual orientation.”

“Mac’s pretty aware,” Kai moved on, ignoring the bait, “I mean, you spend a lot of time talking to Benjamin, and he knows Todd, so who do you think he thinks this new guy is?”

“Yeah, I was thinking about that. But when you say he’s ‘pretty aware,’ exactly what does that mean?”

Kai stopped at the traffic light on Figueroa Boulevard. He reached over, grabbed Mason’s head from behind, and planted a passionate kiss on him. When they parted, Mason found the bulge in his crotch filling up and leaving him wanting more.

“I really like you, Mason,” Kai admitted, touching Mason’s face lightly, then returning his attention to the road. “I think Mac’s figured that out.”

“I’ve never been… He and Mom always saw me with girlfriends, but never a guy.”

“How much time have you spent with your dad… I mean, since your mom died?”

“A couple of holidays, mostly. Why do you ask?”

Kai explained that parents often suspected when their child was gay, usually long before the kid did. Regardless of how he may have acted in the past, there may have been telltale signs in spite of the past girlfriends.

“My point is, you’re what, early thirties? The only people you talk about are other guys. If he doesn’t suspect something he may at least be entertaining the idea.”

“I guess I’ve never established an adult relationship with Dad. We were never close, so….”

“We can ask him when he’s more available to answer, which will probably be sooner than later,” Kai suggested, pulled the truck into a driveway. “We’re here. Home sweet home.”

“Wow. I somehow wasn’t expected your place to be larger than Dad’s..”

They walked inside.
